Anja Pedersen
PhD at Swedish Agricultural University, DVM, Equine Dentistry Specialist, fNCED Dr. Anja Pedersen is a dedicated equine veterinarian from Sweden and a recognized Fellow of the Nordic College of Equine Dentistry (NCED), reflecting her commitment to advancing knowledge and practice in equine dental care. She co-authored a pivotal research article titled âBacterial Contamination of Equine Dentistry Equipment â Effect of Cleaning and Disinfectionâ, published in Animals (2021). The study, conducted at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, investigated microbial contamination on equine dental instruments and the head supportâhighlighting the need for stringent, evidence-based hygiene protocols in equine dentistry. Beyond her research contributions, Dr. Pedersen has actively engaged with the equestrian community. In 2012, she presented insightful talks at the HĂ€stmĂ€ssan in BorĂ„s, including: âHĂ€stens mun â en komplex apparatâ, where she explained equine oral anatomy and masticatory physiology. âSĂ„ förebygger du bettrelaterade problemâ, focusing on how bits may affect equine oral health and how to prevent related issues.

Astrid Bienert Zeit
Prof. Dr. med. Vet. EVDC Equine, European Veterinary Specialist in Equine Dentistry, FachtierĂ€rztin fĂŒr Pferde, EVDC-Dip. (Equine Dentistry) Dr. Astrid Bienert-Zeit is a highly respected specialist in equine dentistry and sinus surgery, currently heading the Department of Dental and Sinus Diseases at the Burg MĂŒggenhausen Equine Clinic. She commenced her veterinary studies at the Free University of Berlin and completed her DVM at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in the year 2000. Her doctoral thesis focused on advanced diagnostic methods for equine molar diseases, laying the groundwork for her clinical and academic expertise. In 2002, she became Head of Equine Dentistry and Sinus Surgery at the Equine Hospital in Hannover, establishing her reputation in managing complex equine dental and sinus cases. By 2008 she had earned the additional specialist qualification in equine dentistry (âZusatzbezeichnung Zahnheilkunde beim Pferdâ) and in 2013 she became the first European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC) Diplomate in equine dentistry in Germany. Her clinical and academic contributions span a range of high-impact topics: she has addressed equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH), complications following mandibular cheek tooth extractions, and advanced imaging techniques for dental structures. In addition, she has served as guest editor for a special issue on equine dentistry in Veterinary Sciences, promoting research in clinical equine dentistry, dental anatomy, and dental-sinus system interactions. .

Brennen McKenzie
VMD, MA, MSc Dr. Brennen McKenzie is a small animal veterinarian, researcher, and author with over 20 years of clinical experience. He received his veterinary degree (VMD) from the University of Pennsylvania in 2001 and later completed a Master of Science in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2015. He is a past president of the Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine Association and has been a strong advocate for applying scientific evidence and critical thinking in veterinary practice. Since 2009, Dr. McKenzie has authored the widely read blog The SkeptVet, and for many years he contributed a regular column to Veterinary Practice News. He is also the author of Placebos for Pets? The Truth About Alternative Medicine in Animals, a book exploring the role of alternative therapies in veterinary care. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. McKenzie currently serves as Director of Veterinary Medicine at Loyal, a biotechnology company conducting pioneering research into aging and healthspan in dogs. His expertise lies in evidence-based medicine, epidemiology, geroscience, and veterinary communication.

Carsten Staszyk
Prof. Dr. med. vet, DVM, Dr. habil., Specialist in Veterinary Anatomy (FTA), Professor of Veterinary Anatomy, Histology & Embryology, fNCED Professional Overview â Prof. Dr. Carsten Staszyk is a leading authority in equine dental anatomy and periodontal research, based at the Institute of Veterinary Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology at Justus-Liebig University in GieĂen, Germany. He completed his veterinary studies in Hannover, earning his doctoral degree and specialization in anatomy in 2002, followed by his habilitation in 2006. Since 2012, he has served as Professor at GieĂen, where he combines academic leadership with advanced research and teaching. Chris Pearce
BVSc, CertEM(IntMed), CertES(Soft Tissue), DiplEVDC-Eq, MRCVS European and RCVS Recognized Veterinary specialised in Eq.Dentistry, fNCED Dr. Chris Pearce is a highly esteemed equine veterinary dental specialist and the founder and director of Equine Dental Clinic Ltd (EDC) â the first and now the largest veterinary practice in Europe solely dedicated to equine dentistry. He earned post-graduate veterinary qualifications in internal medicine and soft tissue surgery, and in 2001 became the first veterinarian in the UK to qualify as an Equine Dental Technician (EDT). In 2014, he successfully passed the inaugural European Diploma of Equine Dentistry examination, becoming a recognized European Veterinary Specialist (EVDC) and receiving equivalent recognition from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) . Dr. Pearce has held multiple leadership roles in professional organizations, including: Chairman of the BEVA/BVDA examining committee for EDT exams BEVA Council Representative for Equine Dentistry (for seven years) Chairman of the BEVA Dental Working Party (guiding political and educational policy in equine dentistry) In 2011, he was honored with the Pet Plan Vet of the Year Award in recognition of his contributions to equine dentistry and equine welfare. Chris is a prolific educator and examiner: he lectures extensively and evaluates students both in the UK and internationally. His professional interests lie in pioneering advanced techniques such as minimally invasive surgical methods, restorative dentistry, and preservative treatments â placing him at the forefront of equine dentistry on a global scale. In 2013, he founded the Equine Dental Clinic Ltd in Dorset, UK. Since then, the practice has grown into a premier centre of excellence for equine dentistry offering advanced referral services, routine dental care, specialist CPD courses, and state-of-the-art imaging â including on-site CT scanning â within its purpose-built facility opened in 2022

Dowen Birkhed
The iconic Prof. Dowen Birkhed, D.D.S., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Cariology Professional Overview â Prof. Dowen Birkhed is an esteemed dental researcher from Sweden, renowned for his expertise in cariology (the study of dental caries), fluoride-based caries prevention, and oral hygiene research. He earned his dental degree (D.D.S.) in 1970 and his Ph.D. in 1974 from Malmö University. From 1970 to 1988, he served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Bacteriology and Cariology at Malmö University. In 1989, he became full Professor and head of the Cariology Department at the University of Gothenburg, a position he held until his retirement in 2013. In 2024, Dowen Birkhed was promoted to Doctor Jubilee at Malmö University, which was 50 years after he defended his PhD thesis in 1974. Academic Contributions â Prof. Birkhed built a large and influential research group and supervised numerous Ph.D. students. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to multiple textbooks and book chapters. He is widely respected for developing evidence-based fluoride protocols in preventive dentistry, including a systematic fluoride use method that remains influential in dental hygiene practices. Honors & Recognition â Among his accolades, Prof. Birkhed received a prestigious Swedish dental research award in the early 2000s for his outstanding contributions to cariology and fluoride research. He was also honored with an international scientist award for his global impact on dental caries research. Legacy & Influence â Even in emeritus status, Prof. Birkhed remains a guiding figure in cariology. Jessica Roßgardt
DVM and Equine Dental Practitioner IGFP e.V., Researcher in Equine Dental Histology Professional Overview â Dr. Jessica RoĂgardt is an accomplished researcher specializing in equine dental pulp histology and anatomy. Johanna Schneider
Johanna Schneider graduated from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany in 2008. After spending a few years in mixed practice in Norway, she found interest in equine dentistry. She finished her Designated Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Equine Dentistry) in 2019 and started her part-time residency with Dr. Chris Pearce and Nicole du Toit in 2020.

Jonathan Olijnyk
DVM, DipECVDI (Equine) Researcher in Equine Diagnostic Imaging, associated with SLU Professional Overview â Dr. Jonathan Olijnyk is a veterinary researcher and specialist in equine diagnostic imaging, with a focus on sinonasal disease and advanced imaging techniques. Laura Heilen

Manfred Stoll
DVM, fNCED, Dipl. EVDC(Eq) European Specialist in Veterinary Dentistry (Equine) Professional Overview â Dr. Manfred Stoll is a distinguished veterinary dentist and founder of the Horse Practice and Dental Clinic in Breithardt, Germany. Padraic Dixon

Rob Pascoe
BVSc fNCED DipAVDC-Eq FRCVS, fNCED RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Dentistry (Equine), Equine Dentistry Referrals Ltd, Kent, UK. Professional Overview â Mr. Robert Pascoe is a distinguished veterinary surgeon and specialist in equine dentistry, based in Kent, United Kingdom. In 2024, he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for Meritorious Contribution to the Veterinary Profession. Clinical Practice â Mr. Pascoe currently operates Equine Dentistry Referrals Ltd, providing specialized equine dental services. He has lectured extensively in the UK, Europe, and North America on equine dentistry and has established the Equine Veterinary Dentistry Discussion Group, a forum for clinical discussion among over 600 colleagues globally.

Stijn Teysen
DVM, fNCED and NCED board member Founder & Manager, Vetrident Equine Dental Clinic Professional Overview â Dr. Stijn Teysen is a Belgian veterinary surgeon and Fellow of the Nordic College of Equine Dentistry (FNCED). He graduated from Ghent University in 2004 and began his career in equine practice with a focus on internal medicine and dentistry. Szabolcs Korsós

Tim Barnett
BSc(Hons), BVM&S, MSc, CertAVP, DipECVS, DipEVDC(Eq), MRCVS Clinical Director & Partner, Rossdales Equine Hospital & Diagnostic Centre, Newmarket, UK Professional Overview â Dr. Tim Barnett is a dual specialist in equine surgery and dentistry, serving as Clinical Director and Partner at Rossdales Equine Hospital & Diagnostic Centre in Newmarket, UK. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2005 and initially worked in general practice before joining Rossdales in 2007. He completed an 18-month internship followed by a surgical residency at the University of Edinburgh, co-supervised by Rossdales. In 2013, he earned an MSc with Distinction for his research on post-operative outcomes in horses undergoing laryngoplasty for recurrent laryngeal neuropathy. Tomas Sterkenburgh
DVM, PhD, Biomechanics Specialist Professional Overview Dr. Tomas Sterkenburgh is specializing in equine dentistry, with a particular focus on biomechanics. Torbjörn Lundström
